Last Sunday on Nigeria’s most consistent literary review – http://www.bukrepublik.com – Lucius Ndimele had the great opportunity of interviewing the highly acclaimed author of The Abyssinian Boy, Onyeka Nwelue.

I dreamed of standing tall on the world stage some day like Wole Soyinka. He is a man that I admire a lot. He is my god. I started admiring him from childhood. I thought he survived on writing alone, until I grew up and realized that no writer in Nigeria could and can survive on writing alone. Many of our writers can not even afford to buy new slippers to wear or new clothes. And these are the very foolish ones who want to get their reward from I don’t know where. Since I’m primarily an artist, I started exploring other terrains and ended up in film making and music business. However, I also figured filmmakers are poor and that in music business, you need to use your sixth sense, I started doing other things outside of the arts. So, my survival has never been arts. You will die poor if you leave everything to arts.
